Fun and Free Homeschool Resource: StoryJumper

As someone new to homeschooling I am excited when I find new resources that are fun and engage students. A  recent site that I found that is perfect for school teachers and homeschoolers alike is StoryJumper.

"StoryJumper is an online tool that makes creative writing fun for kids. Using our interactive workbook and lesson plans, teachers spark students' interest in developing and writing complete stories.Kids can then put their creativity and project skills to work in crafting their very own professionally published hard-back books!" from Storyjumper Website.

I have used this tool with my kindergartner. She learns how to put together a story, how to do some basic graphic work, and about the components of a book like the title page or book dedication. We have made two fun books so far, and I hope to use the site more as she advances in reading.

For more advanced students and schools, there are tools to help with story structure and the option to buy class sets of the books created at a discount. While hard copies cost per book, sharing the book online through social media is free.

Writing music into the night & tired of it

5Image by .Live.Your.Life. via FlickrHello Everyone,

I have been very busy writing music and writing articles on music, and teaching music. Music. Music. Music. And more Music! All in one night I have taught two online music history courses, composed an intro for an upcoming album, and completed jazz curriculum for a client on the West Coast. Busy. Busy. Busy.

I wish I was not so busy. My baby girl's first birthday is coming up soon and I cannot believe that the first year is over already! It makes me sad inside. I don't know. The first three months were very, very hard. I felt so very alone, even though my church friends visited often and brought me dinner and even cleaned my bathroom (thanks C.J.!) My mom-in-law did visit for a week, which did help immensely. My own parents have not seen her, yet. We hope to drive down to S. Florida in the spring to see them.

Soon she won't want to drink a bottle, soon she will be too big to cradle and cuddle in my arms, soon she will be talking up a storm and the baby babbles will disappear like dust. I hope that I have been the mom that she has needed. I hope that I have been the wife my husband needs. I feel like I am pulled from all directions. I can't do everything, but I try, I try so hard...to be a good mom, a good wife, a good teacher, a good musician...and I feel so many times like I am just failing at everything.

Every night I work till midnight. Its the only time I can concentrate on my work without entirely neglecting my family (and yes, I guess I neglect myself). It's not that I do not enjoy music. I love it! I just envisioned that when I got married and had my first baby that I would take care of her and write my music during my free time. Now I take care of her, teach online courses in my free time, attempt to be a wife, and work more into the late hours of the night. I am always tired. Always exhausted. Not very happy, to be honest.

Maybe I shouldn't be complaining. I really shouldn't. Things could be so much worse. I know single moms who never see their children, parents that have to scrounge just to make ends meet, and so many people without a job. I know I should be thankful for work. Hey, we are breaking even this month (almost)! That is something to celebrate, but when can I be a mom, just be a mom? When will I be a wife, and not have to be a teacher and writer and composer...not that I mind, but not all at the same time, and not 30 hours a week every week.

Sorry so sad tonight. Didn't mean to unload. Why is it easier to talk to cyberspace than a real person? Dunno.

Going to bed...I think...

Night,
Mamí Mozart

Quiet Thursday

Hola Everyone,

Baby is sleeping soundly on the futon, and I am just enjoying the quiet before the craziness of the school year begins. Hubby will be working again 12-14 hours a day with the university basketball team, I start teaching music, and it seems that the lazy (and ridiculously hot) summer is coming to an end.

Smiles,
Mami Mozart

Sonrisas,
Mami Mozart

Shiny Urinals, America, and Latino Pride

This morning I scrubbed a church urinal, and I felt shame welling up within me. My pride ached within my chest. Years of college study, teaching at the university, my national reputation as a composer meant nothing as I succumbed to the worst of Latino stereotypes - the Spanish Maid. A hundred small steps brought me to this place, shining the receptacle of a hundred men's waste. The American economy, high energy bills, one too many vacations this summer, a new baby, a car that is too new, a body that is too old, university budget cuts - all contributing factors. In the end, my husband and I decided that taking care of our child and paying for the necessities was more important than our respective egos.

I suppose my handsome gringo husband, his mother having to support four children on a janitor's salary alone, gave him a unique perspective on the cleaning job. He understood that children do not judge their parents the way that society, or even our own hearts do. But I had been raised that if you succeed, are the best, and overcome all through hard work and dedication, that you would want for nothing. Even when I chose the least lucrative field of all - the arts - I had foolish faith that as long as I gave my all, all would be already.

But then the economy failed, our old Toyota died, and I gave birth to our new baby girl.

I spoke with my mom on the phone yesterday about the new cleaning job, along with other happenings from the week - baby took her first steps, I was published in Yahoo!, and I am composing a film score for an art film in California. I admit my relationship with my mom is tenuous. Its been calm for many years now, but I am always afraid that it will revert to the shouting matches of twenty years ago. The child within in me, I suppose, fears for the worst. She reminded me of the time when she scrubbed toilets, a couple of years after she had served as V.P. of my dad's engineering company. There is nothing shameful in taking care of one's family, no matter what the job.

Jump back one more generation, and I think of Abuelo and Abuela, newly arrived from Cuba. My abuelo, a former medical student in cardiology became a pizza delivery boy, and eventually worked in construction. My abuela, a professional singer in her youth, then a kindergarten teacher (and official seamstress for the Cuban resistance against Castro), worked in a shrimp factory for twenty years. Each day she peeled shrimp in a factory in Miami, along with other new immigrants to America. Abuela had lost a young daughter in Cuba, and never again saw the child's grave once she stepped on American soil.

Sacrifice. Love. Pride.

These adjectives describe any Latino father working a day job so his children can eat for one more day, or the Hispanic mama slaving away in a restaurant kitchen or cleaning a bathroom just to provide a warm bed for her family. Mis hermanos y hermanas, your children do not care if you feed them working at a high paying job or as a janitor. All they care about is that you show them love. Ignore the idiots who try to pin the label "lazy" onto you, just because you speak the mother tongue to your children. The Latino people are hard working, American citizens or Americans citizen-to-be. It is only fear that attempts to keep us down. It is only fear that prevents us from succeeding. It is only shame that we put on ourselves which keeps us from holding our heads up high.

Next week I will again clean shine the urinals, once again scrub filth, and once again feel the pain welling up within my sinful heart, but this time I will crush the shame and replace it with pride - the same pride that mis abuelos felt as they stepped onto American soil for the first time, the same pride my mother felt as she cleaned the church bathroom decades ago to put food on the table, and the same pride that I feel as I hold my little bebe in my arms, knowing that she and her papa have done all that they can to give her a chance at a healthy and happy life.

Midnite musings

Hola Everyone,

(Yawn) Its 4:30 am and I just managed to put my little baby to sleep once again. She started crawling a few weeks back and her sleep schedule went out the window. The funny thing is that she started pulling herself to stand a week before she started to crawl. In fact, except for chasing down mommy or daddy in our small apartment, she tries standing more than she crawls.

Having your own child is definitely much different than teaching someone else's children! I have probably taught thousands of kids by now, from preschool to graduate school, but having my own little booger running about sure changes things. :-)

Plus side today: I made her some yummy peas/carrots/onions stuff and she actually ate it, no questions asked!

Ok, back to sleep....(YAWN!)

Juggling Baby and Work

Hello Everyone!

For those that do not know, last fall I gave birth to our first baby...a sweet little girl who is as active as her mamí, though she looks like her daddy (bald and all!) She has had a cold all this week, so I have had less time than I had hoped to work on Mamí Mozart.

Check out Mamí Mozart's updated Lesson Plan pages. I have been working in art and music education for over a decade, and linked to some fun and easy art and music projects. I hope to add another twenty links or so (maybe today?). Please feel free to share these fun music activities. They work great at home, at school, at daycare, or just because!

Much of my educational experience has been with at-risk children, and I have tons of music and art lesson plans to share that are specifically for children with ADD, ADHD, live in the inner city, have emotional disorders, etc. I really feel that music and art gives a creative outlet for these children, who often have very few safe outlets to express themselves. Parents have loved these lesson plans, too.

I also added a "Going Green" section to the Lesson Plan page. These lesson plans not only help the environment, they are often easy and FREE! :-)

I hope you sharing Mamí Mozart with your friends and family!

Smiles,
Mamí Mozart

PS I will try to post in Spanish as well. Pero, hablo "Spanglish" y my Spanish writing skills are "muy mal" (or is it "malo"?). Right now I will be using an online translator and doublechecking it. If anyone has any Spanish resources (or other language resources like Creole) that you would like to share, just let me know!
