Mami Mozart is Back!

Glad to be Back!
After a long hiatus from Mami Mozart, largely due to a new move to Buffalo, New York,
finishing up my animated opera Libertaria, and just overall busyness that all moms live through, I am happy to be able to return to Mami Mozart and share more fun music ideas, art lesson plans, money-saving tips, and even more!

Quick Halloween Costume Ideas using Kid's PJs!

Halloween is just around the corner!
It's always one of the busiest times of the year. My daughter's birthday is on Halloween, which means the usual fun birthday party preparations. Now that we are in New York, it's great to be near family for the holidays and birthdays. What does she want to be this year? Well, the Incredible Hulk of course! (That's also what she was LAST year!) Hubby made the cake, a Depression era recipe that is great on taste and low on cost! Alice Currah shares the recipe on Savory Sweet Life.

What's great about the recipe is that it doesn't have eggs, milk, or butter! Not only is that a great cake, but it's great for those who have food restrictions, allergies, or just don't eat dairy. Hubby made a chocolate cake with green frosting and the Incredible Hulk on top. Gotta love it!

Well, it's glad to be back. Busy making some vegetarian chili, savory chicken breast, and baked tortilla chips for la familia. So time to go!

10 Easy Ways to Save Money at the Mall this Christmas

Pentagon City Mall Food Court

1) EAT BEFORE YOU GO
Don't go to the mall with an empty stomach and full wallet. That way, at the most you will splurge on a snack for the kids (and at $5 and more for a pretzel or ice cream cone, even that can get pricey).

2) LEAVE THE CREDIT CARD AT HOME
Instead, put the amount of money you plan to spend in an envelope marked "Christmas Shopping" that you keep in your wallet. Once the money is gone, then it is time to go home or window shop.

3) MAKE A LIST
To prevent falling for the hundreds of CHRISTMAS SALE TODAY signs, make a list of what you need. If you find that item on sale, great, buy it. But if that polka dot alligator must-have purse is not on your list, then it stays on the shelf.

4) GIVE THE KIDS A CHRISTMAS GIFT  ALLOWANCE
Give each of your kids $5, $10, $20, whatever you feel is within budget and age-appropriate for them to spend. Your child can choose to spend the money on a gift for someone else, donate it to a local holiday charity, or save it for the next trip to afford more expensive items. It is even better if they have to EARN the money.

5) IF YOU NEED TO EAT, EAT AT THE FOOD COURT AND SPLIT IT!
Even at inexpensive restaurants, you end up paying more to cover overhead, tip, drinks, etc. At the food court, you can order a large meal that is split between the kids, can split drinks, don't need to pay a tip, and sometimes can even get free refills. You can easily cut your food budget in half!

6) THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A MUST-HAVE!
No matter what the commercials say, you do not HAVE to have anything at the mall. Most holiday items can be bough much cheaper online or at a thrift shop.

7) JUST SAY NO TO FADS
You notice how commercials blast us with bizarre clothing and tell us we NEED to buy it? You want gawdy jewelry? Go to the thrift shop for some 80s classics, don't spend $55 on a pair of cheaply made earrings at Macy's. Want those ridiculous loud prints...Goodwill has plenty of LOUD leftovers waiting for you. While the Christmas Furbee is something your child really REALLY wants, try to find something longer lasting or something that encourages creativity or has a special personalized touch. Anything from a personalized homemade doll to an engraved children's Bible to a bike will be something remembered and cherished for long periods of time.

8) MAKE A MENTAL LIMIT FOR WHAT YOU WILL SPEND ON CLOTHING
I used to work retail and I know what clothing is worth. Mark-up is often 200+% on actual worth of the clothing. Instead of waiting till Christmas to shop for clothing holiday gifts, make a mental note to keep an eye out for cute t-shirts, accessories, and outfits throughout the year.
9) CATCH THE CHRISTMAS BLOCKBUSTER MATINEE
If your local mall has a movie theater, catch the matinee movie. Depending on your location, you can easily save $1-3 per person. Also, keep those student IDs, military IDs and senior citizen discounts handy. And don't bother with the overpriced candy and popcorn. Nowhere else is $5.75 for a single candy bar ok.

10) BUY AT OUTLET MALLS AND STORES
Places like Ross, Marshall's and other outlet stores sell last year's clothes at relatively inexpensive prices. Be careful, though. Some upper crust stores have tried to get into the outlet market, selling unwanted electronic, jewelry, clothing, etc. at regular prices.

DON'T GO TO THE MALL
And the easiest way to save money a the mall is not to go at all. While inexpensive forms of entertainment, malls are meant to part you with your hard-earned cash. You wouldn't watch a TV channel dedicated to selling you unnecessary items all day, so why go to the mall? Rediscover your crafty side and create homemade Christmas cards, personalized Christmas mix CDs, photos of the family in decorative frames, and other low-cost memorable gifts.

Free Halloween Download

Happy Halloween everyone!

Getting ready for my baby girls' birthday bash on Sunday! We are going to have a blast! I wrote a fun and spooky Halloween track in honor of her birthday called "Halloween Eve's Birthday Bash!"

Download it for free here:

I can't believe she is going to be one already! Time flies! I am making her a piñata for her birthday (it's half done right now in the closet). She has gifts coming in from loving grandparents and uncles and aunts. What a fun day it will be! A Halloween Birthday!

Let me know how you like the music track!

Halloween and Birthdays!

Hello Everyone!

Starting this year, Halloween is going to be a special event: Baby's birthday!

This was me dancing to Thriller last year shortly after the passing of Michael Jackson. I was about six months pregnant with my baby girl. Had a blast making this Michael Jackson Thriller prego tribute!

We are getting ready to celebrate her birthday this Halloween. Daddy is a coach, so we are having a sports themed birthday party at church Halloween afternoon. Everyone will dress up in their favorite sports teams (although one of my friends might dress up as a lacrosse player).

Exciting times! Birthdays and Halloween!

Smiles,

Mamí Mozart

The Perfect Labor Day Weekend

Toys-R-Us store at United Square shopping mall...Image via WikipediaHola Everyone,

Labor Day weekend was simple but wonderful. On Saturday we went to Toys R Us and bought baby a new car seat. She is so small in it still! She loved facing forward and making faces with us in the mirror (one second...baby has decided that she wants to run around with a contract she found under my computer desk....).

Sunday was church, of course, and baby decided that she is much to big to just sit during service. She ran around the back church area, nearly escaped down the aisle several times, and even found a ball to toss. Needless to say, I had to take her to the nursery before the sermon started. Sunday I didn't play congas in the praise band and was looking forward to simply sitting with my hubby. Well, I spent the time watching baby run around and play (and avoid her morning nap until fifteen minutes before church ended).

On Labor Day, hubby had to work some with the Murray State University basketball team and tennis team. We still had time for a mini-cookout. Hubby made some burgers, I took the inflatable pool to the grassy area behind our apartment, and we enjoyed a picnic (even if I messed up Abuela's nearly perfect chicken salad recipe).

We had such a lovely day. I was happy to take a day off (nearly) and he was too (nearly) and we enjoyed each others company and the baby's company, as well. Simple but fun. And I couldn't have asked for a more perfect holiday weekend.

:-)

Vacaciones en Nueva York

Hola,

Mami Mozart

Back from vacation

Hola Everyone,

We returned from our vacation in New York. There is nothing like spending quality time with family. I am so glad that we had a chance to visit. Living so far away from family (we are literally spread everywhere, from New York to South Florida to Kansas) that it is great to enjoy the company of family (and to get a break, too!) My daughter had a wonderful time with her cousins (even though they fought over toys almost as much as they played!).

If you are looking for some fun activities for you and your kids this July 4th, you might want to check out my latest article:

WIll be writing more soon. Just started using Scribefire, so I am hoping that I will be able to post more often.

Take care,
Mami Mozart
