Fun and Affordable Art Activities for Kids: Creativity that Won't Cost You a Bundle!

Fun and exciting arts activities for kids using everyday household items.

Creativity does not need to cost a bundle. These fun ideas are great for the classroom, home, a stormy afternoon, or even parties. Everyday items such as ice cube trays, magazines, clothes pins, flour, and left over holiday tissue paper can be the tools for exciting creative expression in your household or classroom. Try these fun and inexpensive ideas with your children today.

Abstract Ice Paintings

Supplies: Non-toxic paint, ice cube trays, paper, crayons and water

Fill each the ice cube tray with 3/4 water. Add paint to each tray until each section is filled to the top. Use a spoon to stir in the paint. Freeze trays. Have the children draw simple pictures on large sheets of paper. Once the "paint cubes" are ready, have the students paint a wash of color over their drawings. The drawings will "magically" show up through the ice color wash. Set the pictures to dry and hang for all to see!


Silly Self-Portrait Collage

Supplies: Magazines, markers and/or color pencils, paper, glue, scissors

Each child draws an oval for their face. They can use color pencils for shading in skin tones, freckles, and/or hair. Using old magazines, each child can recreate their own face (and body) by using the parts from people in the magazines. Kids have a lot of fun mixing and matching eyes, ears, noses, feet, hands, etc. and seeing the zany results. You can even go digital and try using a computer for some zany results!


Easy Stretchy Salt Dough Sculptures

Recipe: 2 Cups of white flour, 1 cup of salt, approximately one cup of water (as needed)

Have the kids help you mix the salt and flour, as you slowly add water. When the flour comes off the sides, it is ready for sculpting. After creating a fun sculpture (some ideas are animals, bowls, or ornaments), you can harden the sculptures by either leaving it in the sun for a few days or baking at a low temperature for 20-45 minutes. Baking time depends on the thickness and size of the sculptures. Once the sculptures are hard, kids can decorate the sculptures using paint, glue, and markers.



Holiday Tissue Paper Paintings

Supplies: Gift Tissue Paper in Vibrant Colors, Water, Paper

Have lots of leftover birthday and holiday tissue paper? You do not have to throw gift bags of paper away. Instead, recycle it for some painting fun! Dip small portions of bright tissue paper in water and use it to paint on large pieces of paper. Kids will have a great time expressing themselves!


Clothes Pin Dolls

Supplies: Wooden Clothespins (large preferably), yarn, glue, markers, pipe cleaners, and fun items for decoration (stickers, googly eyes, buttons, etc.)

Large wooden clothes pins can easily be transformed into entire doll families. Use the round knob as the head. Kids can wrap pipe cleaners around the middle for arms. After attaching arms, coloring the entire clothespin with markers (or even paint) can change the clothes pins into superheroes, a family, animals, or whatever your child's imagination can think of. Extras like yarn, googly eyes, or buttons can be added for extra decoration.

Insomnia Strikes Musician Mom!

Insomnia Strikes Musician Mom

You know the feeling, it's 4am and you need to sleep, your body says it's time to sleep, but your mind is racing over the latest issues of the day. Maybe you are worrying about that cough that Maria has had the last week, the test that John may or may not pass, maybe you have a big project at work or need to buy groceries tomorrow but don't have the time. Maybe a relative really, really got on your nerves or your spouse has been insensitive. Maybe you are stressing about getting pregnant or about the newborn that has just managed to fall asleep in your arms while you brain is wide awake. 

Whatever the case, whatever the reason, all moms go through this - insomnia. 

Tonight's insomnia was brought by work and music. If you don't know already, I am a composer and last year I finished my first opera. It took two years. That means for half of my daughter's life, mommy has been working on an opera, which only makes sense since I was writing an oratorio when she was in utero. Our lives became so enmeshed in mommy's opera that my hapless preschooler would proudly bang on her toy piano and announce, "I am writing MY opera!" (To date, she has decided not to continue the task, although there are two songs that she has been singing for a year that still stem from her earlier opera days, one of which I hope to record later this year.)

My mind has been racing. I finished the opera earlier in the fall and it has been premiered. It's an animated opera, so it's up on YouTube. Welcome to the 21st century! In any case, I have been enjoying a less creatively stressed out time, although I have to admit that I have other projects and classes to teach that always take up time, but compared to finishing an opera, well, this has seemed less stressful.

I've enjoyed teaching our daughter. We are going through kindergarten material right now and it really is fun to see how much she enjoys the little projects that we do. She really likes science and math and loves books, although reading has been a chore of sorts.  

She loves all of this one-on-one mommy-time, and I enjoy seeing her grow and learn and explore the world.

So why the insomnia? Maybe it's decades of pressure as a classical musician, always trying to one-up myself on the next project, maybe it's the positive response to the opera that has encouraged me to expand on the project considerably, maybe it's just pride in my work, but in any case, a part of me wants to continue to work on the project, make it bigger, better. 

But why? And perhaps that's the biggest issue. The why...My daughter is young, we are hoping to expand our family this year (fingers crossed)...

The next opera or symphony or film can wait until those days where my daughter doesn't hang on my every word and the silence of the house needs to be filled up with the sounds of music.

"It's Music Time" Circle Time Song

It's Music Time!

When I was teaching at the MOSI At-Risk Elementary School in Tampa, Florida, one of my fellow teachers suggested that I create a short song to begin each music class. The fun kid's song would indicate that music time has begun, giving some continuity to the class. I followed her suggestion and wrote a short song that encouraged student participation and prepared them for class. I used the song to begin the kindergarten and first grade classes. 

"It's Music Time" has simple hand motions and words, and was a wonderful way to start out each class. There are fun drum sounds and motions, clapping, jazzy scat, and snapping. Lyrics are below. You can adapt the song with your own fun lyrics and motions!

"It's Music Time" originally only had three verses. Adding stanzas and occasionally changing the order of the verses encouraged children to listen carefully!

Teething Tablets Poison Recall! Must Read! Recall Info!

Hola Everyone,

It looks like big business is busy poisoning our kids again. This time it is with Hyland's teething tablets, which have been recalled because of belladonna poisoning (a form of nightshade).

Really? So when are Americans going to finally realize that big business and corporations are not looking out for us. Do you really think that we would be in the situation we are in if the American government hadn't sold out to their corporate masters? So what? They poison our kids, they poison us, they sell chemicals under the heading "food", they gives us medicines that kill hundreds of thousands of people, and then they have the audacity to charge us outrageous rate for health insurance? Democrat or republican, our government has sold us out Americans. I don't know how to fight it. All the politicians are only interested in their own paychecks (tea party included). Maybe its time for a good old fashioned rebellion.

Hope you and your babies are safe. Please read the article if you have given those teething tablets to your child. I know I had to throw them out, too.

UPDATE: Lack of child safety cap led to several overdoses in children. Apparently if you only gave your child minimal doses, there was no ill effect. The jury is still out on whether the recommended dose (12 tablets a day) had a negative effect.

Baby Growing up

My baby girl is slowly growing up. She "runs" around everywhere, teeth are coming in, and she finally started feeding herself Cheerios. Yesterday my friend asked me how I was feeling since baby's first birthday is around the corner. I suppose the feelings are mixed. My friends and family, everyone, said that the baby stage is a short one and that I should enjoy every minute. It would be so short.

Now she has begun to toddle (granted she started early before 9 months even). She still talks in baby babble, but now she hates drinking from a bottle (and she stopped nursing months ago). She still looks cute in onesies, but she was too grown up to sit in my lap during music class this week.

I am glad that she is independent, or as independent as babies can be. She is pretty fearless like her papa and like her mommy tries to be. She welcomes new challenges and is excited to meet new people. She loves to cuddle, but on her own terms. She is stubborn but has a sweet, sweet spirit. She loves to laugh and smile. My baby girl might have her daddy's eyebrows and physique, but she has her mommy's big brown eyes and heart.

Baby is growing up. And mommy is growing up, too. Cherish your little one and hold her tight. The seconds are fleeting and soon she will be grown.

Baby has a cold this week. There is nothing sadder than watching your baby sick and tired, whining because she doesn't feel well. Thankfully, it's just a cold, but coupled with teething and a rash, she is one miserable little child. She usually is so very, very happy, but this week she has been clingy and tired.

We enjoyed watching Shirley Temple movies since she is sick this week. Normally she doesn't care for videos at all, but something about Shirley Temple's sweet voice and sunshine smile really touches everyone in the room. My baby girl dances around with the songs coming from the video, and waves bye bye to Shirley. Somehow, even though she is sick, this week has become another special memory: my baby girl, Shirley Temple, and me.
