Fun Theater Improv Games for Kids: Dramatic Fun for Parties, Classroom, or Living Room

Fun Theater Improv Games for Kids: SUBHEAD: Dramatic Fun for Parties, Classroom, or Living Room

Dramatic play has always been an excellent way to encourage creativity in children and teens. Try some of these fun games at your next party, on a rainy afternoon, or in your classroom.

Theater and dramatic play has always been a fun and exciting way to encourage self-confidence, creativity, and cooperation in children and teens. These games do not require a lot of materials and can be modified by age group and number of children playing.

The Hot Seat

A single chair is set up in the front of the room. Child A sits in this chair. Child B approaches Child A and gives them a reason to leave the chair. The reason can be as silly as "Watch out! A killer pig is coming to eat you!" to "TRAIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!" Child A quickly leaves the chair and Child B takes their spot. The game continues with the next student approaching the sitting child with another zany reason to leave the chair. This game is a lot of fun and is excellent as a warm-up activity for older theater groups. The game can be played organized or can be played "popcorn" style, where students approach the chair in no particular order.

Freeze with a Prop

A container full of random props is placed at the front of the classroom. Student A chooses a prop and begins to act out an impromptu scene with the prop. The main rule is that each prop has to become something else. (Ex., a broom cannot be used to sweep. The broom can be used as a baseball bat in an imaginary softball game). After a short time (usually a minute or so), Student B taps Student A on the shoulder. Student A freezes and Student B takes the prop and mirrors the exact position that Student A has. Student A sits down and Student B continues a new scene using the prop in an entirely different manner. This game works better with older children. Popcorn style leaves less dead space in the scenes, while taking turns encourages shy children to play.

Interpretive Dancer

Child A pretends to be a speaker from another country. As Child A begins speaking a mock dialect (mostly gibberish), Child B attempts to "translate" using interpretive dance. Things can get really nutty with this game!

Superhero Dance Party

A small box contains slips of paper with names of various superheroes. One child is the party host. Three or four students choose a slip of paper. The host pretends to have a party. Each child with the slip of paper "knocks" on the imaginary door and joins the party. Each guest must act like the superhero they chose, but cannot directly tell the host who they are. The host must guess which child is which superhero. The game ends when the host either guests all of the students or gives up. Then play begins again. With smaller groups of children, I let all of the children play each time. With larger groups, only four to five children should be playing at one time. Encourage students to really act out how the Hulk would drink a bowl of punch, how Spiderman might dance, or how Cat woman would open a gift.

Fun and Affordable Art Activities for Kids: Creativity that Won't Cost You a Bundle!

Fun and Affordable Art Activities for Kids: Creativity that Won't Cost You a Bundle!

Fun and exciting arts activities for kids using everyday household items.

Creativity does not need to cost a bundle. These fun ideas are great for the classroom, home, a stormy afternoon, or even parties. Everyday items such as ice cube trays, magazines, clothes pins, flour, and left over holiday tissue paper can be the tools for exciting creative expression in your household or classroom. Try these fun and inexpensive ideas with your children today.

Abstract Ice Paintings

Supplies: Non-toxic paint, ice cube trays, paper, crayons and water

Fill each the ice cube tray with 3/4 water. Add paint to each tray until each section is filled to the top. Use a spoon to stir in the paint. Freeze trays. Have the children draw simple pictures on large sheets of paper. Once the "paint cubes" are ready, have the students paint a wash of color over their drawings. The drawings will "magically" show up through the ice color wash. Set the pictures to dry and hang for all to see!

Silly Self-Portrait Collage

Supplies: Magazines, markers and/or color pencils, paper, glue, scissors

Each child draws an oval for their face. They can use color pencils for shading in skin tones, freckles, and/or hair. Using old magazines, each child can recreate their own face (and body) by using the parts from people in the magazines. Kids have a lot of fun mixing and matching eyes, ears, noses, feet, hands, etc. and seeing the zany results. You can even go digital and try using a computer for some zany results!

Easy Stretchy Salt Dough Sculptures

Recipe: 2 Cups of white flour, 1 cup of salt, approximately one cup of water (as needed)

Have the kids help you mix the salt and flour, as you slowly add water. When the flour comes off the sides, it is ready for sculpting. After creating a fun sculpture (some ideas are animals, bowls, or ornaments), you can harden the sculptures by either leaving it in the sun for a few days or baking at a low temperature for 20-45 minutes. Baking time depends on the thickness and size of the sculptures. Once the sculptures are hard, kids can decorate the sculptures using paint, glue, and markers.

Holiday Tissue Paper Paintings

Supplies: Gift Tissue Paper in Vibrant Colors, Water, Paper

Have lots of leftover birthday and holiday tissue paper? You do not have to throw gift bags of paper away. Instead, recycle it for some painting fun! Dip small portions of bright tissue paper in water and use it to paint on large pieces of paper. Kids will have a great time expressing themselves!

Clothes Pin Dolls

Supplies: Wooden Clothespins (large preferably), yarn, glue, markers, pipe cleaners, and fun items for decoration (stickers, googly eyes, buttons, etc.)

Large wooden clothes pins can easily be transformed into entire doll families. Use the round knob as the head. Kids can wrap pipe cleaners around the middle for arms. After attaching arms, coloring the entire clothespin with markers (or even paint) can change the clothes pins into superheroes, a family, animals, or whatever your child's imagination can think of. Extras like yarn, googly eyes, or buttons can be added for extra decoration.

Vacaciones en Nueva York

Hola,

Mami Mozart

Back from vacation

Hola Everyone,

We returned from our vacation in New York. There is nothing like spending quality time with family. I am so glad that we had a chance to visit. Living so far away from family (we are literally spread everywhere, from New York to South Florida to Kansas) that it is great to enjoy the company of family (and to get a break, too!) My daughter had a wonderful time with her cousins (even though they fought over toys almost as much as they played!).

If you are looking for some fun activities for you and your kids this July 4th, you might want to check out my latest article:

WIll be writing more soon. Just started using Scribefire, so I am hoping that I will be able to post more often.

Take care,
Mami Mozart

Juggling Baby and Work

Hello Everyone!

For those that do not know, last fall I gave birth to our first baby...a sweet little girl who is as active as her mamí, though she looks like her daddy (bald and all!) She has had a cold all this week, so I have had less time than I had hoped to work on Mamí Mozart.

Check out Mamí Mozart's updated Lesson Plan pages. I have been working in art and music education for over a decade, and linked to some fun and easy art and music projects. I hope to add another twenty links or so (maybe today?). Please feel free to share these fun music activities. They work great at home, at school, at daycare, or just because!

Much of my educational experience has been with at-risk children, and I have tons of music and art lesson plans to share that are specifically for children with ADD, ADHD, live in the inner city, have emotional disorders, etc. I really feel that music and art gives a creative outlet for these children, who often have very few safe outlets to express themselves. Parents have loved these lesson plans, too.

I also added a "Going Green" section to the Lesson Plan page. These lesson plans not only help the environment, they are often easy and FREE! :-)

I hope you sharing Mamí Mozart with your friends and family!

Smiles,
Mamí Mozart

PS I will try to post in Spanish as well. Pero, hablo "Spanglish" y my Spanish writing skills are "muy mal" (or is it "malo"?). Right now I will be using an online translator and doublechecking it. If anyone has any Spanish resources (or other language resources like Creole) that you would like to share, just let me know!
