Fun and Free Homeschool Resource: StoryJumper

As someone new to homeschooling I am excited when I find new resources that are fun and engage students. A  recent site that I found that is perfect for school teachers and homeschoolers alike is StoryJumper.

"StoryJumper is an online tool that makes creative writing fun for kids. Using our interactive workbook and lesson plans, teachers spark students' interest in developing and writing complete stories.Kids can then put their creativity and project skills to work in crafting their very own professionally published hard-back books!" from Storyjumper Website.

I have used this tool with my kindergartner. She learns how to put together a story, how to do some basic graphic work, and about the components of a book like the title page or book dedication. We have made two fun books so far, and I hope to use the site more as she advances in reading.

For more advanced students and schools, there are tools to help with story structure and the option to buy class sets of the books created at a discount. While hard copies cost per book, sharing the book online through social media is free.

Confessions of a Disorganized Mama! Homeschool Days!

Visit to the Buffalo Science Museum
I have to admit, I'm not the most organized individual. In fact, when I said I was planning on homeschooling our daughter after moving to Buffalo, where the school district's perform at less than 15% passing, my husband wasn't UN-supportive, but the subtle roll of his eyes indicated that maybe this artistic and disorganized, and admittedly "scatterbrained" mom may not be able to handle homeschooling. But after a few months, our daughter, who just turned four, is already excelling at kindergarten reading/writing/math skills, loves art, enjoys yoga, and has a passion for science and animals that I don't think I would have appreciated had I opted for a local preschool.

We go to the zoo (even yesterday when it was cold and the animals were hiding out in hibernation), go to the museum, and she just ran up to me screaming "Mommy! I want to do school!" after finishing a messy but beautifully painted Christmas stocking. I guess it's these little moments that I would be missing, that I don't want to miss. And sure, our schooling is more like an  hour here and an hour there, and spontaneous field trips when we get bored of the indoors (library today anyone?), but it's a wonderful experience and I am blessed to be able to enjoy it! Now back to schooling! :) Happy Friday!
